Whisper Flower Farm

about

Whisper Flower Farm is a 1/6 acre flower farm + floral design studio on Duwamish land (Seattle + Renton, WA).

~~

This farm is an exploration of the transient nature of flowers - commitment to slow growth, diy luxury, this land, and each other. We prioritize regenerative farming, agricultural diversity, and care for pollinators. You can read about our values below.

Thank you for choosing local flowers + connecting with our small, queer, disabled-run farm <3

Whisper Flower Farm

our values

flowers are collective survival

Flowers are often seen as extraneous, decadent, and a bit unnecessary. In reality, flowers are a critical part of our ecosystem and our survival. Our global food supply is dependent on flowers and the pollinators they feed / house. In addition to non-native flowers like dahlias, our farm grows more than 40 types of native western Washington flowers and grasses.

Flowers also restore us. They just feel good. Being around flowers reduces our cortisol levels and can support trauma survival. Flowers inspire ritual -- they help us celebrate, grieve, and show love. Flowers comfort and connect us to / in this living world.

slow grown

The slow flower movement is a response to environmental harm and abusive working conditions in the global floral industry. Commercially imported cut flowers (e.g. flowers sold at all major grocery stores / wholesaled) are also tied to state violence and broader human rights violations.

Our flowers are grown seasonally with regenerative practices (low-till, non-toxic fertilization, and attention to pollinator care). Additionally, as a farm led by a disabled grower, slow grown carries multiple meanings for us. Farming is hard work but these flowers are not born from suffering. We prioritize body wellness and care for all who tend this land.

luxury is a human right

Ethically grown flowers can be expensive to grow and to buy. For many of us, flowers are just not something we can afford. We believe decadence and connection to beauty is a human right. We sell a range of arrangement and bouquet sizes and are committed to providing flowers at a budget that our communities can afford.

This farm was born out of close relationships and donated time ~~ help from community members, friends, and other farmers. We hope to be a community resource and are here to connect with other farmers, community groups, and mutual aid projects.

ritual of letting go

Something powerful happens when we love what can't and won't last. While locally grown flowers tend to last longer than store or florist bought, we don't grow exclusively for vase life. Growing outside of vase life promotes agricultural diversity and lets us love on non-traditional cut flowers.

This means that in an arrangement some of your flowers may last up to two weeks while others wilt after a day or two. The practice of including flowers and grasses that may not last gave this farm its name. There's ritual here for us: flowers are like a whisper -- ethereal, special, and then gone.

Flowers invite us to hold on a little less tightly; we hope they do the same for you.
